HABITS [Jesus] “I have given you an example to follow.” John 13:15 NLT Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Christ did. 1 John 2:6 NLT
Why did Jesus develop godly habits? • Not to get the approval of ________________________ • Not to get the approval of ________________________ • Not to feel better about ___________________________ • But to get ______________________________________ to do God’s will
Seven Habits of Jesus 1. ______________________________: Spend time in prayer Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness for prayer. Luke 5:16 NLT [Jesus] took Peter, John and James with Him and went up onto a mountain to pray. Luke 9:28b Then little children were brought to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. Matthew 19:13 …Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray… Luke 6:12
2. ______________________________: Spend time alone But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed. Luke 5:16 While it was still night, way before dawn, he got up and went out to a secluded spot and prayed. Mark 1:35 Msg
3. ______________________________: Make close friends He appointed twelve that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach. Mark 3:14 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” Matthew 26:38
4. ______________________________: Get outside your circle 8 times Jesus is criticized for being with “tax collectors and sinners”
5. ______________________________: Go to church He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. Luke 4:16
6. ______________________________: Internalize the Bible Over 30 times Jesus answers a question or temptation with “It is written...”
7. ______________________________: Live on purpose They tried to keep him from leaving them. But he said, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.” Luke 4:42b-43
